Head coach Mike Riley met with the media Monday morning for his weekly press conference. During his 30 minutes at the podium, he spoke extensively about quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. and his status after being knocked unconscious against Ohio State Saturday night.
“Tommy is going through the protocol for concussions,” Riley said. “He will go through that. He feels good. I can tell you that right off
the bat. As this goes forward we will know more about his availability.
I don’t have a crystal ball in that way. I won’t be able to say if he’s
ready to play until later in the week and what happens in the
Riley expects to know more about Armstrong’s status by Thursday. In the meantime, Ryker Fyfe is considered Nebraska’s starting quarterback with Zack Darlington is his backup. Riley doesn’t plan on burning freshman Patrick O’Brien’s redshirt.
As for other injury updates, Riley said he thinks offensive guard Jerald Foster may return before the end of the regular season. He is not expected to return by Saturday’s matchup with Minnesota, but he could return by next week. That’s great news for the sophomore as he’s battled his way back from a knee injury suffered during fall camp.
Right guard Tanner Farmer is also getting close to returning, per Riley. He’s been sidelined after suffering a severe ankle sprain against Wisconsin. Riley also believes that right tackle David Knevel is “getting better,” as well as I-back Devine Ozigbo.
Additional Huskers that are listed as questionable at this time are linebacker Michael Rose-Ivey (elbow), wide receiver Brandon Reilly (hamstring), linebacker Marcus Newby (hamstring) and linebacker Chris Weber (knee). Riley is hopeful that they’ll all be able to return to practice and play come Saturday.
