Nebraska was back on a game-week schedule following a much-needed bye week. The Huskers are looking to get back on track following a 34-7 loss to Minnesota.
Coach Scott Frost met with the media Monday afternoon to kick off the Indiana game week. He discussed the status of running back Maurice Washington, the backup spot, preparation for Indiana and more during his time at the podium.
Here’s a quick recap of what was discussed.
>> Running back Maurice Washington was not on the most recent depth chart, although he remained on the roster. However, Frost confirmed that he is “not part of the team right now” heading into the week. As for the future?
“I think it’s still to be determined,” Frost said. “He won’t play this week. I don’t see him being part of our plans in the immediate future. The further out future we’ll have to determine”
Frost said Nebraska has standards that are asked of the players. If they’re not upheld, it doesn’t matter who the player is but they are gone if those standards are broken. With that said, Frost was not willing to call it an indefinite suspension at this time.
Does he remain in classes?
“As far as I know,” Frost said.
However, Washington didn’t practice last week and he didn’t practice today.
Frost also said he wouldn’t have handled the Washington situation any differently. He wished it could have turned out differently though.
"We're going to help as long as they can be helped,” he said.
>> As far as the running backs ready to step in?
Dedrick Mills is the sole-No. 1 running back on the depth chart now. He said that he is ready for the opportunity. He has three players with the -OR- designation behind him: Wyatt Mazour, Brody Belt and Rahmir Johnson.
Frost said Mazour should be back this week. He had a minuor concussion. Frost also said that Johnson is one the team would like to redshirt but that could change based on circumstances and depth needs.
» Kicker Barret Pickering is also close to returning.
“As far as I know, he’s close,” Frost said.
Hopes to get him back soon, but they have a “whole army” of kickers now.
>> Quarterback Adrian Martinez has been working hard to get back after suffering an injury against Northwestern.
“He’s going to do whatever he can to get back,” Frost said.
Frost said it’s still hard to say if Martinez will play against Indiana at this point. That goes for wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson as well.
"We'll see who's ready and who's not," he said.
>> Nebraska needed to work on fundamentals, which is what happened over the last week.
“I was pleased with the bye week,” Frost said.
>> Frost confirmed that the Huskers are wearing the alternate uniforms this week.
“I told the team this morning that if we're going to wear them that they better show up and play with an attitude that makes the Blackshirt alumni proud,” he said.
He also said hat there’s no specific reason to this week for wearing the uniforms, but joked that Nebraska is running out of home games.
