Nebraska defeated Northern Illinois, 44-8, to end nonconference play and now the Huskers are on to the Big Ten schedulee. First up is Illinois on the road.
Coach Scott Frost met with the media for just under 20 minutes on Monday, recapping the win over the Huskies, a look at specific players and their progress, and plenty more.
Here’s the quick news and notes from his time at the podium:
>> Brenden Jaimes was injured against Northern Illinois, but Frost is not commenting on the severity of the situation at this time.
"We're not going to comment on [Jaimes] but we have a depth chart and the next guy up is the next guy up,” he said.
At left tackle, that’s Broc Bando.
>> Nebraska hasn’t won on the road since Frost took over, so he acknowledged the challenge ahead for the Huskers. That’s especially true when Nebraska had the chance to win and let it go.
“Two games in particular we had a chance to win and we didn’t,” Frost said.
With that said, he also admitted that there is a challenge to playing at night. That requires the team to sit around all day at the hotel. Frost said that he doesn’t personally like night games for that reason and others, but he does like them for the fans and how they react to them.
>> Frost noted that walk-on safety Lane McCallum did a nice job stepping in as a kicker against Northern Illinois. But what will happen on Saturday versus Illinois?
"It's only Monday,” Frost said. “We'll figure that out as the week goes on."
>> Darrion Daniels’ was the “D-lineman of the week” following his performance against Northern Illinois. Frost said on Saturday that Daniels controlled things for the defense and the tape backed that up when he watched it.
>> While Frost would prefer his players didn’t talk much outside of the locker room and meeting rooms, he understands there are players that will. The staff trusts the players to say what they’ll say.
“We try not to tell our guys what to say too much,” Frost said.
>> Frost believes JoJo Domann is unique in this defense and has a knack for tackling. He is able to play the run, cover man-to-man and plenty more. Some of what he’s capable of accomplishing may not even be known yet.
"I think we're just scratching the surface of what he can accomplish this year,” Frost said.
>> Following the injury to Cam Taylor-Britt, Frost said he isn’t too worried about the safety position at this time. He wouldn’t go into the extent of Taylor-Britt’s injury, saying it’s possible he could play against Illinois. We’ll see how that continues to trend throughout the week.
>> Frost said he took the area codes off the helmets against NIU. Doesn’t expect them to be back for Illinois.
>> Jeramiah Stovall has been awarded one of Nebraska’s two available scholarships.
