Scott Frost Focused on Saturday as Huskers Prepare for Week 0 Matchup with Illinois

August 23, 2021

Nebraska has named its Blackshirts for the 2021 season. Captains, too. Coach Scott Frost spoke briefly on Monday, focusing most of his comments on the Week 0 matchup with Illinois.

“That was neat,” Frost said about the Huskers’ handing out Blackshirts on Monday. “We gave out 12 Blackshirts and I know those guys are excited to get on the field on Saturday.”

Several Nebraska players spoke on Monday as well, saying they’ve been happy with the player leadership that has developed in their time at Nebraska. When asked, Frost said the Huskers have been “playing hard” and “getting good leadership” from the team, and he’s like how they’ve prepared so far.

Frost said he’s not yet ready to release the depth chart either, instead focusing on the first game. Based on the Blackshirts that were handed out, it seems the spot opposite of Cam Taylor-Britt is still up for grabs but Frost wasn’t yet ready to dive into specifics.

“All I’m focused on is Saturday,” he said.

And so game week begins.

More news and notes:

>> Nebraska heads to Illinois to face a new staff in Champaign. Frost said that presets some new challenges, of course, but the team is aware of that.

He added that the Huskers are doing the best they can despite not knowing what to expect.

>> Frost said there would be some kind of announcement coming soon regarding COVID-19 protocols, but wouldn’t say much else. He added that unvaccinated players will be tested oncer per week, but doesn’t expect that to be a distraction.

When pressed for more on the announcement, Frost said he would have said more if that’s what he wanted to do.

On Monday, the Big Ten announced its policy for teams that cannot play this season due to COVID-19.

>> How does Nebraska feel about the running backs heading into the week?

“Coach Held is an important part of our team” Frost said, while adding that he feels Nebraska will have several running backs ready for Saturday.

>> We’ll end with Frost’s quote when asked how he feels about the defense:

“I feel good about it. I look forward to watching them play on Saturday.”
