They Said It: Northwestern-Nebraska

September 25, 2016

Notable quotes from Nebraska’s 24-13 victory over the Northwestern Wildcats.

Head coach Mike Riley on Alonzo Moore’s near touchdown:

That wasn’t a touchdown, was it? But it was close. And we know close isn’t the final answer, don’t we? But it was close.

On Michael Rose-Ivey choosing to kneel during the anthem:

I found out last night. Michael approached me about it. He wanted to talk to the team, so we set a time this morning after one of our walk throughs. I didn’t know anyone else was going to do it. Obviously, this is a choice they have made for personal reasons and that’s the beautiful thing about the United States that they can do that.

On Nebraska fans traveling to Evanston, Illinois:

People told me about that coming up here. I was just unbelievably impressed. That’s just that great following and loyalty and it’s just unbelievable to have that kind of crowd and that many more people than the other team at the game. It’s just crazy.

On Nebraska’s identity:

We talk about identity in football. That’s an identity for Nebraska, the whole state of Nebraska. How much they care, how much they support their team. It’s a real identity statement by everybody about the Cornhuskers. It’s special.

Safety Nathan Gerry on Husker fans:

That’s the reason half of us, if not all of us, are out here. That’s just what makes Nebraska such a great place. We’re thankful for all they do for us.

Wide receiver Stanley Morgan Jr. on blocking on the reverse for wide receiver Jordan Westerkamp’s touchdown run:

I owed Westy one from last year. I told him that. He didn’t even know I remembered that I owed him one.

Westerkamp on how many family members were at the game:

I couldn’t even tell you. I’m not even sure. But I looked at it and I had my own little cheering section over there.

Quarterback Tommy Armstrong on Husker fans traveling to Evanston:

It was great. I’ve been here. This is my second time here and seeing that, just being able to have that support and fan base here… sometimes it was loud, sometimes you could tell when our fans were on our side. They brought great energy, especially for our defense to get good stops and that’s what we expected, especially myself being the second time I’ve come here and to experience it again. They travel well and do a real good job of being on our side and very supportive throughout the game and loud in certain situations. I just want to thank them for traveling and wish them safe travels back home.
