Three Huskers Named to Senior Bowl Watch List

August 24, 2017

The Reese’s Senior Bowl released its watch list on Thursday afternoon that includes more than 400 players from different levels of college football and three Huskers made the list: safety Joshua Kalu, kicker Drew Brown and right tackle David Knevel.

The Senior Bowl is the most famous of the postseason all-star games and provides 110 athletes with another chance to impress NFL talent evaluators after their careers have come to an end.

Listed at 6-foot-1 and 195 pounds, Kalu has played a variety of roles throughout his career including slot corner and outside cornerback and is moving to safety as a senior. He was fifth on the team in tackles last season with 66 and he led the team with 11 pass break-ups. Kalu hails from Houston, Texas.

Brown, a native of Southlake, Texas, and the younger brother of former Nebraska and NFL kicker Kris Brown, has carved out a terrific career for himself in Lincoln as he is heading into his fourth season as the starting kicker. As a junior, Brown hit all 38 of his extra points and went 12-for-14 on field goals, earning him an All-Big Ten honorable mention by the media. He enters 2017 with 282 career points, ranking him seventh in school history and fourth among kickers.

Knevel, a native of Brantford, Ontario, Canada, is the lone senior projected to start along the offensive line. He played in 10 games and started eight last season but was slowed by an ankle injury. At 6-foot-9 and 315 pounds, Knevel is an imposing presence at tackle.

The Nebraska roster includes just 21 seniors with about half of them having scholarships. Safety Nathan Gerry was Nebraska’s lone representative at the 2017 Senior Bowl.

Phil Savage, the executive director of the senior bowl, stopped by a recent Nebraska practice and spoke highly of junior quarterback Tanner Lee.

The 2018 Senior Bowl is set for January 27.
