Husker Radio Network’s Sports Nightly on Monday night aired a conversation between Greg Sharpe and Nebraska athletic director Trev Alberts from the day before. That brief conversation occurred hours after Alberts announced the school was parting ways with football coach Scott Frost.
Here are some of the reiterated takeaways from that conversation:
- The athletic director reiterated the decision was made when it was made to create enthusiasm among the program. Alberts said there is nine games remaining and wanted to give seniors, those who invested years into the program, the best chance to win.
- Alberts said Sunday was tough. He thanked Frost for his years at the school and admired how Frost handled the news.
- Mickey Joseph was named interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Alberts once again explained that decision. He wouldn’t be surprised if the Huskers competed with Oklahoma on Saturday, which he’d credit to Joseph. Joseph has Alberts’ full support the rest of the season.
- Alberts praised Husker fans for their support. Fans filled Memorial Stadium throughout Nebraska’s 45-42 loss to Georgia Southern last Saturday. “We would just ask our fans to stay with us, hang with us,” Alberts said. “We’re going to keep working and we’re going to put a product on the field that the state of Nebraska and our fans can be really proud of.”
- Nebraska will enlist third-party help to navigate logistics in a coaching search. Alberts said the current situation allows Nebraska to talk to a lot of people about the vacant coaching position.
- Alberts didn’t want to limit the coaching search but those with head coaching experience take precedent.
- Among this head coaching search comes self-reflection. Alberts said the university and decision makers need to identify the position’s culture before finding someone to fill the position.
Nebraska hosts No. 6 Oklahoma in a 11 a.m. kickoff on Saturday. It’s one of five home games remaining on the schedule.
Joseph will hold his first press conference as interim head coach on Tuesday.
