Adrian Martinez addressed the media for the first time on Monday since being named Nebraska's starting quarterback.
Martinez spoke about why he felt he would be the starter, his feelings going into the season, his friendship with redshirt freshman quarterback Tristan Gebbia and more.
As for how he learned about the starting role, quarterbacks coach Mario Verduzco shared the news Saturday before the final practice in Memorial Stadium.
"I got called up by Coach Veruzco, told me to meet him late Saturday and I drove over on my scooter and I met with him and he told me I was the starting quarterback," Martinez said. "It was a pretty special feeling."
Martinez will become the first true freshman quarterback to start a season opener for Nebraska. When the announcement was made, Martinez said the team was instantly supportive and excited.
While there are big expectations heading into the matchup with Akron, Martinez is ready for the challenge ahead.
"It's an honor to be the starting quarterback at this university," Martinez said.
