Recruiting Recon: 2018 Wide Receivers and Tight Ends

Players currently committed: 4-star WR Joshua Moore (6-3, 173), 4-star WR Manuel Allen (6-2, 170) and 4-star TE Cameron Jurgens (6-3, 225)

How we got here: Recruiting at the wide receiver and tight end position has certainly grabbed a lot of headlines over the past few seasons at Nebraska. As long as wide receivers coach Keith Williams is here, the Huskers will always be in the mix for top end talent. In 2017, Nebraska signed 4-star WR Tyjon Lindsey, 4-star WR Jaevon McQuitty and 4-star WR Keyshawn Johnson Jr. Keyshawn is not currently with the team while taking a leave of absence. At tight end, the Huskers signed a couple of tall redzone targets in 3-star Kurt Rafdal (6-7, 230) and 3-star Austin Allen (6-8, 230).

So far in the 2018 recruiting class Nebraska beat out fierce competition for Moore as his final three included Texas A&M and Florida State with LSU and Alabama not far behind. Nebraska will need to recruit him hard to keep him in the fold but that comes with getting a verbal from the player with the most FBS offers in the country. Allen reminds me a lot of McQuitty from last year’s class. Both in terms of play on the field as a more physical receiver and in being overshadowed by bigger names in the class at his position. Allen could be a big time steal out of California for the Huskers.

Jurgens, from Beatrice, Nebraska, is the clear-cut top player in the state of Nebraska for a reason. The versatile athlete could play tight end or linebacker in college but is being recruited by Nebraska as a tight end. His upside at tight end is significant with a good size/speed combination and good hands. He has been committed to the Huskers since 2015.

Where they go from here: Nebraska is done recruiting the tight end position for 2018 barring something drastic happening.

There is no shortage of talented prospects that have interest in the Huskers at the wide receiver position. Four-star Cameron Brown, who was once committed to Nebraska, is still in the mix to rejoin the class. There are a slew of other wideouts to keep an eye on this cycle like 4-star Tommy Bush, 4-star Isaah Crocker and committed prospects 4-star Brian Hightower and 4-star Mark Pope.

Then there are near 5-star prospects, Amon-Ra St. Brown, who the Huskers are in constant contact with, and Jalen Hall, who is said to be very interested in leaving California for college.  Those two guys should be considered long shots at this point but Nebraska’s chances go up in a big way if the staff locks in official visits.
