Former Nebraska wide receiver Jordan Westerkamp has been waived by the Miami Dolphins.

Miami announced Tuesday morning it had come to a waived/injury settlement with Westerkamp after signing him just over two weeks earlier, on July 30.

Westerkamp played in the Dolphins’ first preseason game last Thursday, returning one punt for four yards, but was hampered by a hamstring injury. The Dolphins, who are thin at wide receiver as is, decided to waive him and another injured wideout to make room for two new faces, Trey Griffey and Rashad Lawrence.

The undrafted rookie earned previous offseason tryouts with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Cleveland Browns but failed to earn a contract. Westerkamp’s 167 career catches at Nebraska ranks second all-time in school history. He also ended with 2,474 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns.

Other Husker news from around the NFL:

>> Rookie Terrell Newby got a team-high 12 carries in Minnesota’s first preseason game last Thursday, a 17-10 win over Buffalo. He finished with 26 yards on the ground and a 7-yard catch.

>> On the other side of the same game, former Nebraska wideout Brandon Reilly had one catch for 18 yards for the Bills.

>> Nathan Gerry, the former Husker safety turned linebacker, was credited with three solo tackles for the Eagles in a 24-9 loss to Green Bay. With presumed starter Mychal Kendricks injured, Gerry has received first team snaps.

>> Tight end Sam Cotton had one catch for 22 yards for the Patriots in a 31-24 loss to the Jaguars.

>> Jared Crick, listed on the latest Denver Broncos’ depth chart as the No. 1 defensive end, was carted off the practice field Monday, but, according to 9News’ Mike Klis, Crick is only expected to miss “a week or two,” after an MRI diagnosed the injury as spasms.
