Is Nebraska Considering a New Offense in the Near Future?

Nebraska was on the road this week so they clearly didn’t host any prospects for this weekend, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t news in the world of recruiting.

Last week, I discussed Mike Riley hitting the road to evaluate a pair of quarterbacks. His first stop was in Kansas to see 3-star quarterback Jace Ruder‍. The dual-threat signal caller is committed to North Carolina but his recruitment gives even more credibility to something I’m hearing about the future of Nebraska's offense. The coaching staff has discussed a move to the spread next season which could include some changes in offensive coaching personnel, should Mike Riley be retained.

It looks like Nebraska will be hosting some big-time players this weekend for official visits. I’ve been able to confirm a pair of official visitors at positions of need. First is 4-star defensive end/outside linebacker Elijah Wade‍. The Las Vegas native has the size (6-5, 240) and athleticism required by Bob Diaco to play the Cat outside lineback position.

The second confirmed visitor is 4-star defensive back Kalon Gervin‍. Nebraska has been in talks with the Michigan native for a long time to set up this official visit. They originally hoped to have him in town for the Ohio State game but that had to be rescheduled for this weekend. I caught up with Gervin last night and he tells me that he is very excited for the trip and looking forward to seeing Nebraska for the first time. He will be joined by his mother on the trip and Donte Williams is his lead recruiter.

Speaking of cornerbacks, Brendan Radley-Hiles‍ took an official visit to Oklahoma this weekend. Everyone’s sources can agree that he had a good time on the trip. After that is where things get messy. There are lots of rumors out there that a flip to Oklahoma is imminent. I have not been able to confirm those reports. That doesn’t mean it can’t happen, but right now I don’t have solid intel of my own to suggest that.

What I can tell you is that Radley-Hiles has been “predicted” to end up at three different schools now not named Nebraska since he committed to the Huskers. The combination of speculation around Mike Riley’s job and him being a respectful kid that enjoys his visits around the country really aide that. I’ve been told numerous times that so long as Mike Riley and Donte Williams are at Nebraska, Bookie will be too. He does still have a visit lined up to Clemson on Nov. 18.

One thing I would like to note. It's incredibly difficult for the staff to continue to perform at a high-level both on the field coaching and on the recruiting trail with so much uncertainty around their jobs. Yes, that is part of the profession but sometimes we as media and you as fans can easily forget that these are humans leading the program that are just as invested in it, if not more than we all are.

The staff has continued to grind away and I'm sure more new offers will continue to go out this week. Keep it locked on Hail Varsity for the latest.
