5 Thoughts on Huskers' Commit C.J. Smith

On Sunday, 4-star safety C.J. Smith‍ became the first recruit to commit to Nebraska during the Scott Frost era. The first official visitor weekend was a productive on for Nebraska. Here are five thoughts on the latest addition to the Huskers’ class.

1. Defensive back is a huge position of need

Before Smith joined the class, Nebraska no longer had any defensive back commits for the 2018 class. Losing Brendan Radley-Hiles, Chase Williams and Mario Goodrich hurt because they are all quality players but also completely destroyed the position group that is the biggest need in the class. Smith is a great start to a complete reset at the position for Frost.

2. Establishing a Florida pipeline

I’m not quite ready to give Nebraska’s recruiting in Florida a nickname just yet even though Floribraska is making the rounds, but I believe the uptick in Florida offers and commits will continue with Frost and company. Right now, they are focusing on the areas of the country they are most familiar with as they hit the ground running in recruiting. If they can keep it up in the years to come, it could pay big dividends.

3. The first one is a good one

When Frost took over the job, there was a lot of talk that he would possibly have to take some “reaches” in the class to fill it out. If the first commit under Frost is any indication, that will not be the case. Under Frost, recruiting may shift to more of trusting the coaching staff’s evaluations versus star rankings, but in this case Smith has a good rating and he’s a good-looking football player.

4. Versatility is key

Speaking of him being a good football player, one word that will be used a lot going forward with players coming to Nebraska is versatile. Smith fits the bill for that as he played safety, wide receiver and nickel back in high school. That type of versatility keeps you on the field at all times when the Blackshirts are on the field.

5. Can Nebraska continue to strike while the iron is hot

Right now, the Huskers are red-hot on the recruiting trail. There is buzz out there when Frost and company show up at a high school or in a living room. Their first visit weekend at Nebraska was an immediate success commitment wise and there will likely be more commits from the weekend. Continuing to ride the wave while starting bowl prep at UCF will be interesting to see unfold.
