Nebraska Recruiting: Quarterback Depth Will Be Fine ... After 2018

Recruiting never stops and it's easy to miss the top stories day-to-day. Recruiting analyst Greg Smith recaps all things Nebraska recruiting news, analysis and more so you never miss a thing.

Short-Term Pain but It Will Be Fine at Quarterback Long-Term

In yesterday’s notebook, I asked and answered the question of which position is the biggest need for the 2019 recruiting class.

One of the responses I received immediately on Twitter was “quarterbacks and lots of them.” While that person may have only been half-serious, there is a lot of concern about the quarterback situation when it comes to how many can play for the Huskers right now. What I would caution though is that this is a temporary problem and requires patience.

Right now, the depth at quarterback is scary. I don’t want to fully rehash how Nebraska got here, but essentially you have two options at quarterback: Adrian Martinez and Andrew Bunch.

However, in the 2019 season, Martinez and Bunch will still be around. Noah Vedral also becomes eligible and 2019 4-star (HV Rating: 90.2) Luke McCaffrey‍ will be in the mix. McCaffrey also plans to enroll early. Nebraska will obviously monitor the situation should something crazy happen but I don’t see a need for a second quarterback in this class. After next season, Nebraska already has it’s 2020 quarterback in 3-star (HV Rating: 84.8) Logan Smothers‍.

This season was always the dangerous one at quarterback, especially if there were transfers. The worst has happened for the quarterback depth this season but brighter days are ahead at the most important position on the field.

Recruit Watch

>> Nebraska linebacker commit and Omaha Burke star Nick Henrich‍ picked up a pretty cool honor. The 4-star linebacker has been named to the 34th annual Butkus Award High School Division watch list.

That’s some cool recognition for a player who is racking up tackles during his senior season and is a leader on his team. Henrich also plans to early enroll at Nebraska.

>> With all of the offensive line talk around Lincoln lately, I had to mention the top five that Nebraska ended up in with one of their offensive line targets. Dohnovan West‍, a 3-star (HV Rating: 83.5) offensive lineman, took an official visit to Lincoln for the season opener. He also named the Huskers as one of his top five schools today.

Look for West to decide in October or early November.

>> Last Friday, I was in Omaha to see Omaha Westside take on Creighton Prep. Westside won the game 37-2 and I came away very impressed with 2021 athlete Avante Dickerson‍. GHe released his first four games of the season highlight video on Monday. It’s pretty easy to see why he’s on the radar as the top sophomore in the state.

ICYMI

>> Jeff Brohm responded to Scott Frost calling Purdue a winnable game. I’m not sure that constitutes as trash talk or just facts, but Brohm was asked about it

>> Former Nebraska wide receiver commit Joshua Moore scored his first collegiate touchdown two weeks ago against USC. His blog series with us was one of my favorite pieces we did last cycle, so I’m glad to see him doing well even if it’s not for the Big Red.
