Honas Done for the Season, Stoltenberg Out Indefinitely

Nebraska will be without two key defenders from the two deep for the foreseeable future head coach Scott Frost announced Monday.

Junior inside linebacker Will Honas is done for the season and will have surgery to repair ligament damage in his knee.

"It's heartbreaking for him," Frost said. "He's one of the guys that cares and works his butt off, the type of teammate you want on your team. That's football and those things happen, but you just hate to see it happen to anybody that's a good kid on any team and at any time."

The Butler Community College transfer made nine tackles through Nebraska's first four games. The NCAA's new redshirt rule, which allows a player to appear in four games without losing a year of eligibility, will mean that Honas will have two years still to play at Nebraska.

"That's where that rule is good," Frost said. "There's a chance you might've been able to get a medial [hardship waiver] anyway down the road, but that certainly cleaned it up for us."

Junior linebacker Jacob Weinmaster was listed at No. 2 on depth chart in place of Honas.

Frost also offered an update on senior defensive lineman and captain Mick Stoltenberg, who missed Saturday's game against Purdue with a knee injury.

"We'll have to see on Mick. Mick's a warrior too and he's going to battle and if he can be out there he will," Frost said. "It's not going to be any time in the near future."

Stoltenberg assisted on three tackles through the three games he played. Carlos Davis was listed at No. 1 at nose guard on the Monday depth chart. Peyton Newell and Damion Daniels were co-listed at No. 2.
