Nebraska safety Tre Neal was a Husker for a short time, but his impact on the program under new head coach Scott Frost will be felt long after he leaves.

Deputy editor Erin Sorensen dives deep into that story in the December issue of Hail Varsity. She spoke with former UCF teammates of Neal’s (and, spoiler alert, current Seattle Seahawks), his high school coaches, Nebraska’s staff and Neal’s new Husker teammates.

We also spent a day with Neal at The Graduate Lincoln for a photo shoot, helmed by staff photographer Eric Francis, that produced the cover and interior images. It’s a story you definitely don’t want to miss.

In addition to the main story on Neal, Sorensen also shares a few interesting side stories along the way of Neal’s time at Nebraska. You can find one of those, detailing Neal’s sudden need for a winter coat for the first time in four years, below.

Neal hadn’t worn a winter coat since he left home for UCF at 18-years-old. He weighed 160 pounds then.

When the weather started to turn cold in Lincoln around mid-October, he called his mom about those coats. He had told her to get rid of them when he moved to Orlando in 2014, but she had packed them up and placed them in her garage instead. She dug them back out and shipped them to Lincoln.

Neal hoped they might fit, but he was 55 pounds heavier than he was when he last wore them. The coats arrived but as suspected, they did not fit. New coats were purchased instead.
