Nebraska Recruiting: Are More Showdowns With Iowa on the Way?

Recruiting never stops and it's easy to miss the top stories day-to-day. Recruiting analyst Greg Smith recaps all things Nebraska recruiting news, analysis and more so you never miss a thing.

There are times when Nebraska offers a scholarship and you sit up and take notice. On Monday, the Huskers offered defensive lineman Logan Jones from Lewis Central High School in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The lineman stands at 6-foot-3 and 255-pounds and is committed to play at Iowa.

Two things jumped out to me right away about this offer. First, Iowa defensive line coach and Jones’ presumed primary recruiter, Reese Morgan, just announced his retirement. That would provide a potential opening for the Huskers to test the waters. Second, Nebraska seems to be making a point of recruiting the state of Iowa hard.

It remains to be seen If Nebraska can consistently pull top players from the Hawkeye State but it won’t be for a lack of effort. In the 2019 recruiting class, the Huskers nabbed defensive end Mosai Newsome. In the 2020 class, they have offered five players from Iowa. Running back Gavin Williams, offensive tackle Tyler Miller, offensive lineman Josh Volk, defensive end/outside linebacker Blaise Gunnerson and Jones are all are quality prospects. Williams, Volk and Jones are all committed to Iowa.

In the class of 2021, the Huskers are recruiting perhaps the top two players in the state for that class: defensive linemen TJ Bollers and Griffin Liddle. It’s always an uphill battle to consistently pull top players out of Iowa as they tend to stay home but the coach in charge of recruiting in the state is Iowa alum, defensive coordinator Erik Chinander. His ties throughout the state could make things interesting and make prospects give Nebraska a second look.

Time will tell how receptive Jones is after picking up the offer but it’s not just on the field where these two division rivals are doing battle.

Recruit Watch

>> The Huskers offered one of the top junior college wide receivers in the country, Omar Manning. He originally committed to TCU and is currently at Kilgore Community College in Texas.

>> Outside linebacker Josh Griffis picked up an offer from Nebraska. He attends IMG Academy in Florida. Griffis was part of the Gators class at one point.

Also, ace recruiter Cam Taylor seems to be on the job already.

>> Not even cancer can keep outside linebackers coach Jovan Dewitt away from Huskers practice.

>> Nebraska’s defense is seeing early signs of growth in Week 2 of spring practice.

>> We got deep into the running back and wide receiver position battles in this week’s mailbag.
