Nebraska Recruiting: Let's Talk About the Huskers' Offers

Recruiting never stops and it's easy to miss the top stories day-to-day. Recruiting analyst Greg Smith recaps all things Nebraska recruiting news, analysis and more so you never miss a thing.

Nebraska has offered scholarships to a lot of prospects. In fact, the Huskers have offered 422 players in the class of 2020 according to Rivals’ database to be exact. At this point, there probably are too many that got their original offer from the previous coaching staff so the vast majority of those offers have been made by Coach Scott Frost’s staff.

The amount of offers put out by the Huskers has become a talking point among fans, prospects and even high school coaches around the country. While the sheer number of offers can take you by surprise, there is a strategy behind the madness so to speak.

Every school treats offers a little differently. For every Nebraska with over 400 offers on one end of the spectrum, there are also schools like Stanford who hardly offer anyone. Also, certain schools just don’t have to offer as many players because of where they are as a program. An example of this would be Clemson.

Part of how the Huskers view offers is a way to get their foot in the door with a prospect. As I explained during a radio interview this week, there are a lot of out of state players that may not make that unofficial visit to Lincoln from a state far away without having an offer in hand. Both the school and the prospect (plus family) need to show some commitment before coming out from Georgia, for example, to check out Nebraska’s campus. Florida State doesn’t necessarily have that problem because the school is so closely located to a large number of prospects.

Lastly, the perception of how many offers are going out right now is a bit skewed. Yes, there are lots of 2020 offers out. However, a high percentage of new offers going out during the evaluation period are for 2021 and 2022 players.

Because of how Nebraska recruits nationally, I can see a scenario where the Huskers are always in the top 10 of offers made in a given cycle.
