Recruiting never stops and it's easy to miss the top stories day-to-day. Recruiting analyst Greg Smith recaps all things Nebraska recruiting news, analysis and more so you never miss a thing.

This January the All-American Bowl Presented by American Family Insurance will once again be held in San Antonio. The All-American Bowl is the premier high school All-American game played annually, showcasing 100 of the nation’s top high school senior football players. In last year’s game Nebraska had Wan’Dale Robinson, Bryce Benhart, Noa Pola-Gates and Ty Robinson all play in the game. Nick Henrich was also invited but didn’t play due to injury.

The upcoming game’s East and West rosters are littered with names of players Nebraska had interest in but committed elsewhere. There are several players in the game who Nebraska is still targeting. A few of them have official visits scheduled for later in the season.

  • LB Desmond Tisdol
  • WR LV Bunkley-Shelton
  • DB Darion Green-Warren

The Huskers do have two commits playing in the game this time around. Offensive tackle commit Turner Corcoran‍ and outside linebacker Blaise Gunnerson‍ are both on the West team. In fact, Gunnerson received his jersey at a ceremony at his school on Wednesday.

Corcoran will have his ceremony on Friday.

In thinking about these two players and what they mean to the class I’ve concluded that they are two cornerstones of the entire 2020 class. It’s not just because they are both very good prospects. They are talented and there are other very talented players in the class including Logan Smothers, Zavier Betts, Nash Hutmacher and Sevion Morrison who have a ton of potential.

The reason that Gunnerson and Corcoran are so important to the class is because of the positions they play and how that relates to the issues of Nebraska football of this season and long before that. Nebraska football has been missing offensive lineman with all-conference potential. If Corcoran reaches his potential he can become that type of player. It will take a bit of time but Corcoran, Benhart and redshirt freshman Cam Jurgens are very likely to be three of five starters on the line in the near future. It’s not hard to get excited about the future of the offensive line.

Offensive line coach Greg Austin can work with that.

If Nebraska is going to make the attacking 3-4 defense work, it will have to become home to All-Big Ten level outside linebackers. At 6-foot-5, 245-pounds, Gunnerson has the size to hold up against the run which we know is important in this league. He also has the quickness and developing technique to get after the quarterback. The Huskers need more guys like him in the recruiting class and on the roster.

There are still more additions to be made to the 2020 recruiting class. But the two guys that will be representing the Huskers down in Texas this January are largely important to this class and Nebraska’s future. Knowing how competitive they are with each other as peer recruiters, I’m sure they’ll be trying to get other All-American Game participants to Lincoln with them.
