Nebraska Recruiting: Huskers Making Noise in Florida with Fans, Fisher

Recruiting never stops and it's easy to miss the top stories day-to-day. Recruiting analyst Greg Smith recaps all things Nebraska recruiting news, analysis and more so you never miss a thing.

The Huskers have made made a big effort into Florida this recruiting cycle. After not having any commits from the Sunshine State in the 2019 cycle, the team currently has four 2020 commits from Florida. Nebraska hosted four official visitors from Florida last weekend.

“I've always wanted guys from that area to see this place because it's amazing,” defensive backs coach Travis Fisher said. “And so being able to get recruits from the state of Florida is not easy. But being able to build those relationships through recruiting in the high schools and stuff in the state of Florida, that’s kind of where I've been and what I've been doing for a while. Then it’s being able to get those highly rated recruits to come up and take a visit.”

It’s a popular sentiment within Nebraska recruiting circles. If you can get guys to check the school out, you’ll have a chance. Fisher is well aware.

“Being able to come to a place where they can see themselves reach whatever dreams they have, whatever they want to do as student athletes in the classroom, and also being able to be around a different environment as far as the fans in the community, it’s awesome here,” Fisher said. “Then there’s being able to see themselves play, early in their careers, is what they see when they come on game day. That’s what they see when they watch us play even when they’re home. I think all those pieces and the relationships are kind of helping us.”

Half the battle when dealing with prospects from so far away is the kid not wanting to leave home. That isn’t necessarily the case with players from Florida. Specifically, Dade County.

“I know one thing about those kids from down there, they’ll go play anywhere,” Fisher said. “They’ll go anywhere to play football. They just love football. As long as football is involved, they’ll come.”

Fisher also remarked that the fans in Nebraska are amazing. It’s here different than Florida because there are so many colleges there. With there being so many major colleges, the state’s college football fans are divided and spread out. Once again, Husker fans are a major selling point on the trail.

“Kids commit to come up on official visits and fans that stay four hours away know about those kids,” he said. “Or kids post things all the time about their visits saying they had an amazing weekend and there are fans that will instantly respond. Those kids love that stuff. That’s where you win at, with the fans. They are amazing here and totally different. It’s that piece that’s not talked about but I’m going to speak about it because I think the fans here are awesome. I think that’s a major piece of recruiting when you have people that stay five, six, seven hours away and they still know about recruits coming to town. That’s huge.”

It is noteworthy to get the famously quiet (to media) Fisher on the record about how impactful the fanbase is for the Huskers. It’s worth tracking how many more Florida players the Huskers land this cycle and into the future.
