Nebraska picked up its second commit from the junior college ranks in as many weeks as Lat Mayen announced his pledge to the Huskers on Twitter on Tuesday.

Mayen is a 6-foot-9, 205-pound sophomore at Chipola College who visited Lincoln over the weekend. He’ll have two years of eligibility at Nebraska. He’s averaging 9.3 points, 8.1 rebounds and 3.0 assists while shooting 46.5% from the field, 40% from 3 and 82.4% from the foul line. Chipola is 11-4 so far this season.

Mayen is originally from Sudan but played his prep ball in Adelaide, Australia. He averaged 12.0 points and 5.3 rebounds while shooting 39.5% from 3 for Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence during the 2016-17 season. He’s played within the Australian national team program at the U19 and U20 levels as well.

Mayen committed and enrolled at TCU, redshirting his first season in 2017-18. He played in 17 games as a redshirt freshman last year before suffering a season-ending knee injury. He averaged 2.1 points and 1.2 rebounds in 7.9 minutes per game, shooting 7-of-20 from 3. After the season, he left TCU and enrolled at Chipola.

At 6-foot-9 with a soft touch on his jump shot, Mayen fits into Fred Hoiberg’s system that takes advantage of frontcourt players who can step out and play on the perimeter. He’ll add more size and versatility to the frontcourt and wing alongside sit-out transfers Shamiel Stevenson (6-foot-6, 240 pounds), Dalano Banton (6-foot-8, 195 pounds) and Derrick Walker (6-foot-8, 235 pounds).

Mayen joins Western Nebraska Community College guard Teddy Allen in Nebraska’s 2020 recruiting class. The Huskers still have one more scholarship to use.
