Nebraska Will Be Well-Represented at the 2020 NFL Draft Combine

A year ago, Nebraska had a reason to feel slightly jilted when the list of NFL Combine invitees was revealed. Former wideout and current Cincinnatti Bengal Stanley Morgan Jr. was the only Husker given an invite.

This year, the Husker program will be better-represented. Darrion Daniels and Lamar Jackson headline a group of four former Nebraska Blackshirts heading to Indianapolis to compete at the pre-draft workout.

Daniels, a defensive tackle who took a grad transfer from Oklahoma State to Lincoln in order to play his final season with his brother, Damion, and Jackson, a four-year cornerback for the Nebraska defense, will be joined by defensive linemen Carlos and Khalil Davis.

The combine is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, Feb. 26, and run through Feb. 29. The full list of invitees can be found here; 337 prospects will participate in total.

An honorable-mention All-Big Ten selection by league coaches following his lone season in the conference, Daniels was an instant impact kind of player for the Husker defense. He was named a team captain before the season and started 11 of the Huskers’ 12 games, his only missed game coming against Wisconsin because of injury. He totaled a career-high 34 tackles on the season, with four tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, and his first career interception.

Jackson concluded his Husker career with his best all-around season in a Nebraska uniform, a second-team All-Big Ten selection, and career highs of 40 tackles, four TFLs, 1.0 sack, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, three interceptions and 12 pass breakups. That was a mouthful. But, it was that kind of a year for the cornerback. Jackson’s 12 pass break-ups led the Big Ten. He was a key figure in a Nebraska secondary that allowed its fewest passing yards per game (200.8) since the 2012 season.

The Davis brothers, Khalil and Carlos, started 11 games each their senior seasons. Khalil earned an All-Big Ten third team selection from the league’s coaches after finishing the year with a career-high 45 tackles (the most among NU's defensive linemen), a team-leading eight sacks and 12 tackles for loss. Carlos had 32 tackles and four sacks (second on the team). Both were eight-time letter-winners at NU as both competed in track and field as well. They were the first Huskers in more than 50 years to be eight-time letter-winners and just the ninth and 10th eight-time letter-winners in the history of Nebraska athletics.

Nebraska is hoping to build a new draft streak this season, and sending a number of representatives to the combine is a nice way to kick that initiative off.

In the 2019 NFL Draft, the Huskers were shut out for the first time since 1963. Morgan and running back Devine Ozigbo and linebacker Luke Gifford and several others signed undrafted free agent deals with teams, but no one heard their name called at the draft.

The 2020 NFL Draft in Las Vegas begins on April 23.
