Hot Reads: Huskers Get Potentially Good News on Recruiting Trail

Technically speaking, nothing officially happened for Nebraska on the recruiting trail yesterday. Practically speaking, Wednesday still felt like a big day for the Huskers when it came to a couple of their top targets.

First, wide receiver Jamire Calvin (4-star, 91.1) announced that he's down to two schools -- Nebraska and Washington State.

Calvin, as you'll recall, reportedly shocked the Huskers' staff when he selected Oregon State on national television at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl earlier this month. Since then, however, things have been trending more Nebraska's way with Calvin.

The second potentially big development came last night as Pasadena, California, cornerback Elijah Blades (4-star, 93.7) decommitted from Florida.

Blades also listed his top five:

Hearing good things for Nebraska as it pertains to Blades. He and defensive backs coach Donte Williams have a relationship that goes back a few years. If Williams were to lure Blades to Lincoln, it's a class-changing type of get on the defensive side of the ball.

Blades' Hail Varsity ranking would put him near the top of Nebraska's current class of commits, in Tyjon Lindsey/Avery Roberts territory. Personally, I think he might be the best player in Nebraska's class if he ends up in Lincoln.

And if the Huskers could add Calvin to the class as well, that would give Nebraska at least seven players rated as 4-stars or better. Talent isn't everything in college football, but it's important. I wrote a little about that yesterday and looked at past Power 5 conference champions' "blue-chip percentage," a calculation of the ratio of 4- and 5-star players to the rest of the signees in a class.

That's a premium story, but with signing day less than a week away there's no time like the present to try out Hail Varsity Premium for 30 days free if you're not already a premium member.
