That didn’t take long.

Only a few days after Nebraska offered Heinrich Haarberg‍, the Kearney Catholic quarterback made it official by committing to the Huskers’ 2021 recruiting class.

Haarberg is the first quarterback in Nebraska to receive a Power 5 offer in over 15 years. He was excited about the offer when Coach Scott Frost called.

“Coach Frost and I've been talking probably once a week or so,” Haarberg told Hail Varsity on Monday. “We have a really cool relationship. He just asked to talk to me today. We talked and he said that he wanted to go ahead and offer me. He had wanted to see me throw in person. He didn't know when that opportunity would come so he just decided to go ahead and to trust his eyes and offer me.”

The 3-star quarterback—who stands at 6-foot-5 and 185 pounds—held offers from a number of programs like Northern Illinois, NC State, Wyoming and Northern Iowa, as well as quite a few others. For Haarberg, he had an idea of how he would narrow his list.

“Really my relationship with the coaches will play a big factor in where I go,” Haarberg said. “The relationship I can build with them. The system isn't that big of a deal to me but I need to be able to develop well in that system and under those coaches. Then really just the atmosphere. Right now, I have a ton of offers from Ivy League and Northeast schools. I've visited the Northeast once and I don't even know much about it. I think taking those visits is going to be key to see where I fit in and see myself next four or five years.”

Haarberg—who threw for 1,869 yards and 23 touchdowns as a junior—is known just as much for his running abilities as he is his passing. He rushed for 468 yards and four touchdowns on 83 carries last season, according to MaxPreps.

He is set to become the first in-state player to sign as a quarterback with Nebraska since Millard North’s Mike McLaughlin in 2001.
