Nebraska Recruiting: How Much Sellout Streaks Matter to Prospects

Recruiting never stops and it's easy to miss the top stories day-to-day. Recruiting analyst Greg Smith recaps all things Nebraska recruiting news, analysis and more so you never miss a thing.

Nebraska’s fan support and history with sellouts is talked about quite a bit. It’s for good reason that it gets discussed so much. As someone who is not from Nebraska but has lived here much of my adult life, I can confidently say that the fan support in Nebraska is unique.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the response to it will test fans across the country. They are hungry for sports to return but the reality is it will be hard to have full stadiums in the fall. There will likely be attendance restrictions around the country as schools try their best to slow the spread of the virus. During his monthly radio appearance on Sports Nightly, Bill Moos spoke about the sellout streak continuing at Nebraska through the 2020 season.

“The sellout streak is alive and well,” Moos said. “If we are told, for example, that we can have only have 30,000 in Memorial Stadium and we get 30,000 – that's a sellout. If there are no limits and we can fill it. There is no place like Nebraska and there are no fans like Nebraska fans. I would guess that the sellout streak would continue."

I completely agree with Moos that the sellout streak will continue through this season and beyond. It’s become a source of pride for Husker fans. The streak is a badge of honor that shows Husker fans stick it out with the team even in tough times. But what about recruits? How much does the sellout streak impact them?

After each home game in the fall when I talk to recruits they all bring up the fan support at Nebraska. They also recognize its something different. Support here is something that makes Nebraska unique from other schools. While it is a great attention grabber, the sellout streak itself isn’t the only thing kids are impressed with. The overall support and passion that Husker fans bring on a weekly basis is what sticks with them.

The sellout streak will be preserved this season in whatever form it takes. Remember that it is one piece of the puzzle of what recruits are impressed by.
