Hot Reads: Chasing History

December 14, 2016

The Nebraska volleyball team is officially in Columbus, Ohio. Arriving late Tuesday evening, the Huskers are ready to chase history.

Nebraska heads into the Final Four defending a national title. To win it all again? It’d make school history. It’s something head coach John Cook spoke about following Nebraska’s win over Washington on Saturday.

“Well, this group is trying to do what has never been done before,” Cook said. “In 2000, we came back and went to the Final Four in 2001. In 2006, we didn’t make it so this is our next shot. It’s a hard thing to do. We’re trying now and we have one goal left: to make history here.”

Looking back over the years, there have been repeat champions. Penn State has done it multiple times, even going on a big run from 2007-2010. The Nittany Lions had won it all back-to-back in 2013 and 2014 before Nebraska ended the streak in 2015. Stanford went back-to-back in 1996 and 1997, then USC in 2002 and 2003 and there were plenty others before that.

Nebraska is ready to add its name to the list of those who’ve repeated as national champions. It won’t be an easy path. The Huskers face Texas on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. CT in a rematch of 2015’s championship game.

The Huskers are ready though. The team has done everything possible to get to this point, including speaking it into existence.

So cheers to history. May the Nebraska volleyball team finally chase it down.

Wakey Leaks

I can’t take credit for the headline of this section. The Internet and specifically Twitter are behind it. That’s the Internet and Twitter for you.

Beyond the great name for this whole thing, the actual story is that a Wake Forest radio color commentator has been leaking game documents for years. It all began when Wake Forest head coach Dave Clawson suspected a breach of security with his game plans. There was an investigation and the investigation led them to Tommy Elrod. Now we’re here making jokes about it all on Twitter, which is the natural progression.

Elrod is not only a Wake Forest alum, but he also played on the football team and served on Jim Grobe’s staff for 11 seasons. Needless to say, this whole thing is not ideal for anyone involved.

This is also likely far from over, so we’ll be keeping an eye on it as more comes out. At least we got a great Internet name out of the deal. Right?

The Grab Bag

  • Minnesota has suspended 10 of its players for the bowl game. That’s going to make things a little interesting.
  • Here’s Tuesday’s practice report from Jacob Padilla. Lots of information there, including an update on Ryker Fyfe.
  • Interested in becoming Rutgers’ offensive coordinator? The job is listed.
  • In case you missed it, Lane Kiffin is now the head coach at Florida Atlantic. Here’s how he got there.
