Nebraska Ranked No. 22 in AP Preseason Poll

October 18, 2022

One might say that the Nebraska women’s basketball team is feeling 22 right now. Seriously, though.

The Huskers will enter the 2022-23 season as the No. 22 team in the country, per the Associated Press Preseason Poll. The rankings were announced on Tuesday. This marks Nebraska’s first preseason AP Top 25 ranking since 2014.

Nebraska enters the season following a 24-9 campaign in 2021-22. The Huskers finished No. 23 in the NET rankings after earning a trip to the Big Ten Tournament semifinals and the No. 8 seed in the 2022 NCAA Tournament.

The Huskers return a number of starters in 2022-23 from the previous year’s team, including preseason first-team All-Big Ten center Alexis Markowski. The 6-foot-2 sophomore averaged 12.8 points and a team-best 8.0 rebounds last season, earning Big Ten Freshman-of-the-Year honors as a result.

Junior guard Jaz Shelley also returns and enters the season after leading the Huskers in scoring (13.1 ppg), assists (5.0 apg), steals (1.8 spg) and blocks (0.9 bpg). She also ranked among the Huskers’ team leaders 6.3 rebounds per game and is considered one of the best shooting guards in the country. She was named a second-team All-Big Ten choice and a member of the Big Ten All-Defensive Team last season.

Isabelle Bourne and Allison Weidner return as well. Bourne enters the 2022-23 season as a team captain after averaging 13.6 points and 7.5 rebounds, and 11.1 points and 4.5 boards, in 2021-22. She is a two-time honorable-mention All-Big Ten selection. As for Weidner, she finished last season averaging 7.2 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. She also started in Nebraska’s final eight games of the 2021-22 season.

Graduate guard Sam Haiby also returns, however she suffered a season-ending knee injury in September.

Nebraska is scheduled to play 10 regular-season matchups against AP preseason Top 25 teams. That includes No. 4 Iowa (2), No. 11 Indiana, No. 13 Virginia Tech, No. 14 Ohio State, No. 17 Maryland (2), No. 21 (Creighton) and No. 25 Michigan (2).
