NCAA FOOTBALL: AUG 31 Wyoming at Nebraska

Martinez sits out Huskers practice

Quarterback Taylor Martinez didn’t suit up for Nebraska’s practice Tuesday night as the senior tries to overcome a turf toe injury that kept him out of the South Dakota State game. It was Martinez’s first missed start since late in his redshirt freshman year in 2010.

Offensive coordinator Tim Beck said Martinez took part in some running work and drills during the early part of practice, but has not participated in any live drills since the week leading up to the South Dakota State game.

“We’re just getting him ready mentally right now by making sure he understands the game plan,” Beck said. “He’s played a lot of football around here. If there’s a guy who could miss a couple of practices, it’s probably him, but it’s a day-to-day situation.”

Beck added that if Martinez wasn’t able to take part in any live drills over the next two practices that it would be “highly unlikely” that he would play this week against Illinois.

In Martinez’s absence, back-ups Ron Kellogg III and Tommy Armstrong are both working with the first team offense.

“Those guys are competing hard and having a really good week of practice,” Beck said. “I like how they’re running the offense and competing. It’s very similar to what they were doing leading up to the last game.”

Armstrong and Kellogg combined to complete 20 of 25 passes against the Jackrabbits for 305 yards while splitting time equally. After Tuesday’s practice, Beck seemed to be leaning towards giving one or the other the bulk of the snaps this Saturday.

“I kind of play it by ear as we go into a game,” Beck said. “I like to see if someone’s got a hot hand or is seeing things better. There are so many scenarios that go into the decisions that are made, and those guys understand that. But they’ll both play if it helps us win.”
